Searching for the records yourself.

Most records for Darwen Cemeteries are available on microfilm in Darwen Library. Copies are also held in Blackburn Central Library, Reference Department. You can search the microfilms free of charge and it is advisable to contact the relevant Library first to check on availability of the microfilm reader.

If you need help.

The cemeteries Office staff can conduct a search of the records for you, if you are able to supply the following information:

Name of deceased
Date of death or burial.
Denomination (religion) and Address are also useful, but not essential.

Once the staff have found a grave number from the index, they can usually look at the graves register to tell you if anyone else is buried in the grave.

Please note that if your search is more complicated - eg. You only know an approximate year of death, or you are searching for several individuals, there will be a grave search fee payable (£10.00 as at 01/04/10). Searches are done as soon as possible, subject to more urgent priorities, so please be patient if you have to wait a few days.

Once you have the grave section and number, it should be possible to find the grave in the cemetery. However some common problems encountered are:

There is no headstone on the grave.
The headstone has been laid down for safety reasons.
The grave is hidden beneath undergrowth.

If you have difficulty in locating a grave, it is possible to arrange to meet a grave digger who will locate it for you. You need to arrange an appointment for this via the Cemeteries Office and give at least two days notice.
