I could not find any information in the Darwen News but his army record paper survive and make interesting reading.
Enlisted at Blackburn on 5 January 1915. At this time of joining up he was working at Joseph Place's Pipe Works, Hoddlesden.

2 March - 31 May 1917: In hosptial due to bronchitis
12 July - 19 Aug 1918: In hosptial with influenza [most likely Spanish Flu]
Died: 27 April 1919: Bronchitis and exhaustion.
