To accompany the unveiling of our World War One Memorial Wall, we have produced a 60-page Book.

This is a comprehensive book and goes into detail on ALL the World War One causalities buried in the Western Cemetery, some with photographs.

It also gives an account of the history of the Friends of Darwen Cemetery group, a history of the Cemetery and an account of the ideas behind commemorating the causalities buried in the cemetery with the Memorial Wall.

This walk was held on the 25th June 2017

The Walk this year was based on the 2011 Cemetery Walk “Torment & Tragedy” and we used this booklet as the basis of the Walk again.
The booklet explaines tales on the darker side of some of the Graves in Darwen Cemetery.

This walk was held on the 13th September 2015 during our Heritage Open Day

The booklet explains on some of the men who fought in Gallipoli during WW1 who managed to survive the campaign but unfortunately died in other battles or died on their return to the UK.

We dedicated the book to the 100+ Darwen men who died during the Gallipoli campaign.

2014

This Walk was held on the 13th September 2014 during our Heritage Open Day

The booklet gave an insight into the 60 plus WW1 causalities buried or commemorated in the Western Cemetery.

2014

This Booklet was not based on a Cemetery Walk but the unveiling of a commemorative stone in the Western Cemetery.

Held on the 3rd August 2014.

The booklet by Tony Foster shows how with carefully research how a broken War Memorial Stone found in the bushes in the Western Cemetery back in 2010, how Tony was able to work out from only the 10 complete names and 11 partial names on the stone where the stone came from and the remaining names not present on the stone. 

The booklet explains the history of the Redearth Road Methodist Church up to it being demolished and also on each of the 31 names that appear on the completed stone.

A fantastic read!

2013

The walk concentrated on the Women of Darwen buried in the Cemetery.

Held on the 22nd June 2013.

Included in the walk was the true story of the White Lady. 

Tony Foster has researched and collated the booklet.

2011

The walk was held on the 30th October 2011

Our most popular walk ever! on the eve of Halloween with over 140 visitors many children and some in fancy dress.
The walk guides were Tony Foster and Harold Heys.

The walk started in the late afternoon sunshine and finished in almost total darkness with dozens of torches lighting the way, many of them held by youngsters.

The booklet describes some of the more gruesome deaths that took part in Darwen.

2011

Our second guided walk in May 2011 followed on from our first walk held in the oldest part of the Western Cemetery and focused on the influential personalities from Darwen such as Eccles Shorrock who built India Mill, William Dewhurst who died when a German Submarine torpedoed the Lusitania.
We also look at Richard Hirst Eccles who was the first burial in the then new Cemetery aged just 1 month old.

This was our very first guided walk back in 2010 and covered graves in the oldest part of the Western Cemetery and introduced you to the opening of the Cemetery back in 1861 and some of the prominent graves in this part of the Cemetery.
